Ancient art - Simba

This used to scare the living daylight out me. LITERALLY! haha. I can't believe i'm laughing. It was not funny at that time. I grew up in Bakau and we had Simbas in our neighborhood quite often. If you're not familiar with it, I'll try my best to explain it to you. Simbas are men dressed up as lions. They look possessed most times LOL. What happens usually is someone in the neighborhood would hire a group of Simbas and organize an event for people to watch them perform. Here's the catch. In order to be a spectator , you have to purchase this itty bitty piece of cloth called "pass" or "fass". I can't recall which one it is but you have the most fun if you don't buy it . What that means is, you risk being beaten up by the Simba. HA! Some Simbas are much nicer than others.

Valentine's Playlist (Ndaga Version)

Note: It's a playlist, so just let it play, it'll move to the next video on its own. To select a particular track click on the box icon (after the pause button) in the video window. Enjoy. :)

Omg

Does this woman look like the author of two cookbooks? Sometimes I feel like Bravo is insulting my intelligence. Padma Lakshmi makes it hard for one to pay attention to the chef's cooking on Top Chef. Like really, do you watch it for the recipes or the chef's who battle it out?

Mandabi by Ousman Sembene Review

Ousman Sembene, the Senegalese film director, has quite the International reputation - his death in 2007 received a lot of media coverage both offline and on-. The wikipedia article on him tells us he was considered the "Father of African Cinema". In addition he also wrote novels which won him great critical acclaim.

His movies are not very readily available back home (as with all other works of art created by African artists - it is unfortunate how much easier it is to lay my hands on Dan Brown's latest than a novel written by a Gambian author, in the Gambia.) After much searching, I was finally able to get myself a copy of Moolade, his last movie, using the Internets. It was hands down the best African movie I had seen until then.

Habib Koité Concert at the Alliance

I went to a free Habib Koité & Bamada concert yesterday at the Alliance, and it's hands-down the best concert I've been to ever. Habib himself plays some five different instruments, and his supporting band are just as strong: his Balofon player (Kélétigui Diabaté), for example, is a dour-looking old man who seems to be more dead than alive, until he sits in front of the Balofon and takes up the sticks, at which point he seems to be more Balofon than man. Then the Old Man of the Balofon put down his sticks, and grabbed a violin from somewhere, and tucked it under his chin and destroyed all movie-initiated clichés I had had of young, white violin players.
