The Launch

We launched balafong last night, and it was quite an amazing experience. My body still feels sore from all the work this weekend, as if I spent the whole weekend playing pose yu ndawe (yes, for all you people who believe otherwise: sitting behind a computer for hours configuring a server is an exhausting occupation, and nowhere near as easy as it looks :)).

Whatever hard work it took though it was worth it: I just woke up and reached for my phone, and there were 30 posts waiting, about everything from fashion to poetry, and a dozen comments from different people. When I started working on the site my driving vision was one of waking every morning, and over my cup of coffee getting access to the latest and best Gambian writing online, as well as being able to participate in a conversation about thsi writing. So to see this vision become reality now is very heartening - I imagine this is what a parent feels like when their child does good in an exam at school.

English Rose

Reading the Sunday Papers. Kate Beckinsale dyed her hair blonde and the comments are not too kind. They are saying she looks like a bimbo and ruined her English rose looks. One angry blonde left a comment and I couldn't stop laughing. She does have a point.

"What is with all the anti blonde comments!! I am a blonde (naturally) and English.

Can we all get along..HA!

I love reading Newspaper comments and I had to share this. Tuition is set to increase for British students and they've been protesting. Now read the comment this American left on the Daily Mail and the reply a Brit gave him/her haha

The American

Despite all of America's problems and issues... these protests remind me of why America is still the best...

Over there... Britain, France, Greece... you guys protest to demand free stuff and handouts because you want others (the government) to support and take care of you.

Attaya comments I found on YouTube

Attaya is brewed green tea very popular in Senegal, Gambia & Mauritania. I'm not sure if other African nations are familiar with it. The tea is loaded with a lot of sugar and mint leaves for added flavor.

These 2 comments moved me.

Welcome

Welcome to the "Live From The Gambia" blog.

Here I hope to be able to tell you about what's going on in The Gambia, from the point of view of an average guy living and working here. For people living abroad who want to keep up with what's happening at home, this blog will try to bridge the gap between reading stories in the media, and actually being here to experience things. For those at home, maybe this will give you a fresh perspective on things, or at least provoke some discussion around issues.

This is not a political blog, which means we will steer clear of any politics, as much as possible. It is also not a blog set up to teach you anything (apart from maybe what it's like to live here), or to get you to start believing in anything - please feel free to disagree with whatever I post, at any time. The tone will stay light at all times, and I would love to hear your comments on anything posted here.

I hope you enjoy it.
