In May 1922, in Dakar, Edward Francis Small published the first issue of the *The Gambia Outlook and Senegambian Reporter*. This was after the so-called Balanghar incident, when Small had gotten into a physical altercation with a colleague, costing him his job. Small’s criticism of government policies at this point had already put him on the wrong side of the colonial administrators.

RE: BARCELONA NEED A PLAN B

On the back of their recent shocking struggle against a young AC Milan side, critics, including my fellow Milan fan, Momodou Sisay Dibba, in his article "Barcelona Need A Plan B", have quickly jumped to remind us of how deficient and predictable the Tiki-taka system of Barcelona is. Yes, we expect that from critics but I’m rather surprised by how easily Barcelona fans have jumped ship and choose to join the nay-sayers.

Without even pulling statistics, let's see reasons they should have jumped to the defense of their team and a system that is arguably the best football fans have ever seen in the history of the beautiful game.

Day Twenty-Three: The Last Person You Kissed

3F,

I know it said person, but I choose you all because… well, just because. I’ve been with you all for two years now. This past October marked the beginning of our third year together and we’re gradually moving close to our final stop. Then I shall bid you all goodbye and go back home to make use of the knowledge and skills we all acquired. For some, it might be the last time we would see and talk.

Day Six: A Stranger

Mon ami,

My readers would wonder why I chose to call you my friend when you’re supposed to be a stranger to me. They might not understand, but I bet you are smiling at the term, for we both know what it means and why it was my ‘endearment’ of choice.

Which Facebooker Are You Dealing With?

NO! This is not one of those quizzes you always come across on your news feed. This is the truth, the whole truth and er, just the truth!

I’ve been on Facebook for 4 years now and have witnessed a sack-load of changes made in the layout, the different services etc. One thing that has not changed, however, is the people.

Yellow Blue Nonsense - "Proudly Gambian??"

I’ve taken a week and a day since the incident to write this piece because I did not want it to be a “red, black nonsense” like my brother Latirr Carr would have. I wanted to make sure my “anger” was toned down from “red” to “yellow and the “black” to “blue” . I hope I’ve toned it down from an angry piece to an appeal to those concerned so effective changes can be made.

Jollof Holiday (Part 1)

When I stepped out of the plane the first thing that hit me was the hot air blowing gently across the runway, the sweet smell of culture and the dusty aroma in the air filled my nostrils. That's when I knew I have reached home. I could not wait to pass through the endless and tiring security checks I had to go through before being allowed out of the airport. After an excruciating hour which felt like eternity, I was finally allowed to exit the arrivals lounge and into the crowded waiting area where my family stood eagerly waiting to welcome me.

Red Black Nonsense - 1.7 Million Apologies

I’m really terribly sorry that I have to do this. Ironic isn’t it? The fact that countless times we hear these words is most disheartening. How quick we are to apologize for being jerks; for doing something stupid yet expecting quick forgiveness. It is a truth that is blatantly human yet also understandably unforgiveable. However nothing should be unforgiveable...no? I admire the guts in a man or woman who takes responsibility for his/her actions. You did it...it was stupid...but yes! You’re not bloody sorry.

I do not write for a living. I write because it has become a part of me and one I don’t see myself giving up for anything in the world. That aside, I don’t see my brain being moulded into that of a disciplined journalist. The noble profession is miles beyond my reach for I would always choose emotion over reason. That is my art and I fell in love with it after I found it hard to channel my anger as a child.

Red Black Nonsense - Yeup Chi Pet

After a crazy week of gay debates on the Balafong forum, relationship debates started full swing as it must be said that love and romance are topics very much appreciated by the average Homo-Sapien. Our hunger for love is one which is borne from the moment we enter this world head first to the strength of our mothers’ push. However, the topics ironically were more a war of words between both genders finding fault in each other for what happens to be a current situation of “marriage crises” which is not unique to the smiling coast. In fact, Senegalese TV very recently held a series of debates on the issue, one of which on the famous TV show Tiowli Tiowli (pronounce chowli chowli – seemingly a combination of two Chinese surnames) spoke of an issue not foreign to our ears in The Gambia; the topic focused on the infidelity of married men and the corruption of young female minds.
