RE: BARCELONA NEED A PLAN B

On the back of their recent shocking struggle against a young AC Milan side, critics, including my fellow Milan fan, Momodou Sisay Dibba, in his article "Barcelona Need A Plan B", have quickly jumped to remind us of how deficient and predictable the Tiki-taka system of Barcelona is. Yes, we expect that from critics but I’m rather surprised by how easily Barcelona fans have jumped ship and choose to join the nay-sayers.

Without even pulling statistics, let's see reasons they should have jumped to the defense of their team and a system that is arguably the best football fans have ever seen in the history of the beautiful game.

Barca Needs A Plan B

Barcelona Need a Plan B

Last year Maximilliano Allegri(AC Milan Coach) stated “Barcelona are predictable’ shortly before their champions league quarter final match with Barcelona in 2012. Upon hearing this, I thought this guy cannot be serious, for we are talking about a team many argue is up there with any other club team football has seen. After the first leg, I was somehow convinced that the man had clear ideas when he stated that. And that is: They will pass, pass, pass and pass and look for the killer pass. Where is the surprise? None! This is completely different from one’s inability to stop a  killer pass. I could not see any even after the second leg when they won in controversial circumstances. We will come to that in a moment, for now let us state the Hypothesis and look for empirical evidence to either reject or fail to reject it.

On 4 days of official work - An Open Letter to The President

January 28, 2013

Your Excellency,

On 4 days of Official Work: An Open Letter to The President

Discussions among Gambians over the past week have been centered on the recent announcement that effective February 1st, 2013, the official workweek will be reduced from 5 days to 4 days. From elites and intellectuals in offices and online; home and abroad, to university and high school students in taxis, to the average man and woman on the streets and in market places, discussions have continued and I’ve heard many view points. There are many talking points, opinions and sentiments. However, the one common sentiment I have ascertained from all the discussions I’ve heard is UNCERTAINTY! Too many Gambians are unsure and afraid of what this change will mean to their daily lives and livelihood; social and economic.

Goodbyes and Kind Things Like That

Today I taught my first college class for the last time. Towards the end of the session, something weird happened. An outlandish desire to hold on to these 20something’s who wouldn’t be able to tell anyone anything about me, in whose faces I saw not names, but percentages. As they left, they turned in their papers, gave me the 5-second-American-smile and walked away. In a moment of spontaneity, I wondered if I should bar the door with my body and demand hugs, against everything in the professional conduct code. I looked down, gathering papers, and marveled over the end of things, why it means so much.

Red Black Nonsense - "Dark Times"

Is it not trying times we live in? I’m typing a new edition of Red Black Nonsense after weeks in absentia and I’m constantly hitting the ctrl+s keys for one reason and one reason only; these are “dark times”. Companies either have no money to spend, or are too scared to spend; the value of the dalasi is on a downhill slope; NAWEC is on the usual; GAMTEL inherited the black cat that went into the NAWEC generator; beggars have multiplied in a month; Price for petrol has increased twice in 2 months; some crazed killers killed 3 people in one weekend; a Gambian got shot in The United States; yet shouldn’t we be happy for the fact that one good thing has happened for all of us recently...the start of a new tourist season!

Ok, so to be absolutely honest, I receive this year’s tourist season with mixed emotions.

Champions League 2012/13 - Chelsea Vs. Juventus

UCL PREVIEW: CHELSEA VS JUVENTUS

Chelsea are unbeaten in a competitive match against Juventus. At first sight, that sends shivers into the Juve fans, or anyone wishing for a Juventus win tonight. The Blues knocked out Juve    3-2 on aggregate at the second round of the same competition in 2009. Further to that, Juventus holds a dismal record of only 2 wins on English soil (against Villa 82-83 and Man United 96-97). With that, all the Chelsea fans could be forgiven for harboring dreams of a routine win against their Italian counterparts. Without context, that could be misleading.

Juventus are on a 42 match unbeaten run in Seria A, and one could argue that this is no ordinary Juventus team.  Granted they are nowhere near the all conquering Juventus team of the mid-90s; the likes of Zidane, Davids, Del Piero and Antonio Conte.

Much Ado about Zilch

I met this woman a year ago and she had clear white skin and had the biggest...erm...eyes. She was German and later I got to learn she was an Atheist. You know; a white German atheist! In Christianity they are called “non-believers” and in Islam, “kaafirs”. It was later I would learn that the word “infidel” is actually derived from Christianity and from the word “infidelity” and should not be used to describe someone who doesn’t believe in the existence of “A God”. In Christianity, such generosity is shown by example in that Jesus dined with the tax collectors at Levi’s (no..not the jeans..The man) and in Islam it is directed as such; “‘O ye who believe! When ye go abroad in the cause of Allah, investigate carefully, and say not to anyone who offers you a salutation: “Thou art none of a Believer!” Quran 4:94.

Yellow Blue Nonsense - "Proudly Gambian??"

I’ve taken a week and a day since the incident to write this piece because I did not want it to be a “red, black nonsense” like my brother Latirr Carr would have. I wanted to make sure my “anger” was toned down from “red” to “yellow and the “black” to “blue” . I hope I’ve toned it down from an angry piece to an appeal to those concerned so effective changes can be made.

Love is just not enough to make it work

Love is not the foundation on which a successful relationship is built upon, RESPECT and TRUST is. Love is the building that the foundation holds together for without RESPECT and TRUST to hold that love firmly, all you really have in a relationship is just an unhealthy (situation) waiting to fall apart. Yes love is beautiful and very necessary but NO, it is not the most important factor in a relationship.....why? Because if nothing else is there, no matter how great the love is, the relationship will not survive. Don't believe me? Look around you and really try to see why most marriages end in divorce. Is it really because the love is not there anymore? NO, it’s usually because of trust issues or the lack of respect for each other, or the over-stepping of boundaries.
