Google Art Project

I am loving google's new art project, which lets you visit art museums from around the world and see high resolution pictures - you can zoom in and actually see the canvas in great detail - it looks amazing!

Check out, e.g., "No Woman No Cry" by Chris Ofili, a British artist of Nigerian parentage.

Painting for a worthy cause

“Art is normally a rich man’s game, it costs money, so to actually go into villages and leave something that brightens up the place and add something to people’s everyday lives is special, and it’s beautifying, especially if it’s done correctly and respectfully. People travel all over the world to see Graffiti, it’s not just something that you walk past and ignore”.

These are the words of Lawrence Williams, artist and co-founder of Makasutu Cultural Forest and co-initiator of the ‘Wide Open Walls’ project at the press conference welcoming  international painters to The Gambia.

Moulaye Niang

Lately, I've taken a great interest in the African art scene. There is enormous talent in Senegal. I keep smiling as I make new discoveries. I can give you a million and one reasons why the Mona Lisa bores me but that's another post. I'm here to support my people and my continent. African art speaks to me more than anything.

I came across Moulaye Niang today. A very talented jewelry designer and painter who makes his own glass beads. Just breathtaking.

-He was born in Senegal and studied glassmaking at the Abate Zanetti Glass School in Murano,Venice (Italy).

"My project is called Muranero, which is a mix between Murano and 'nero', that means 'black' in Italian.

Ousmane Mbaye

"I'm a designer based in Dakar - Senegal. I create unique furniture made of barrel and galvanized iron. Selfmade man, I think design is freedom." - Ousman Mbaye

A lot of African artists and designers do not have outlets to showcase their works. I was glad when I saw that Ousman had a facebook page and his portfolio was also featured on this website. I'm never gonna look at barrels the same way. This is sheer talent.

Njogu Touray

This blog came about because a Gambian girl was bored enough to share parts of her life with awesome people. I wanna be grey and look back at my old posts and go "wow". I know blogging about watered down pop music and the likes of Katy Perry would not get me that Wow but I hope this does.

These are beautiful paintings by Njogu Touray, a Gambian artist. You might have heard of him. I'm smiling as I type. We are a small nation with an avalanche of rich culture. I miss the mosquitoes, the flies on the mangoes, the funky "apperantes"conductors and their beat up vans, grandmothers chewing kola nuts ( That was my grandma's hobby lol).
