IWD 2013: Take The Promise

It's March 8th again. It's International Women's Day; a day set aside to celebrate all women in the world, irrespective of their backgrounds and differences. We celebrate appreciation, respect, love and admiration towards women. We equally celebrate the numerous achievements registered in the social, political and economic spheres among others. "A Promise is a Promise: Time for Action to End Violence Against Women" is the theme for this year's celebrations. Somewhere in New York, activists and supporters of women's rights are gathered for the 57th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women. Discussions revolve around the priority theme: Elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls. Earlier this year, the world witnessed the greatest movement of feminists and supporters on February 14th, demanding an end to Violence against Women.

Travelogue

Recently I had the chance to do a transit in both Dubai and Senegal on my way home, and spend time in places of waiting in both countries. In Dubai I couldn't leave the airport, a place built for just such an eventuality, a sealed-off World filled with everything a transit passenger might need: numerous bathrooms, prayer rooms, food courts, a smoking room, lots of chairs everywhere (though, sadly, no beds), movement maps and info displays, stores selling everything from perfume to electronics. In Senegal I did not spend much time at the airport; yet getting off the plane, something subtly changed my mood - was it the weather? the people? the language I could now fully understand? perhaps a combination of the above, making me feel once more like an African in Africa...

Day Twenty-Six: The Last Person You Made A Pinky Promise To

Ayo,

In all honesty, I can remember neither the last time I made a pinky promise nor the last person I made a ‘non-pinky’ promise to. I remember making promises… some kept and some still outstanding. I sat for a few minutes, trying to recollect the details but they all seem hazy. My mind wandered to the promise I’ve made to you and I set off thinking about the possibility of keeping it.

On Executions - My View before the GRTS announcement on the execution of 9 death row convicts

We are not in unprecedented territory for we have been here before even on the issue of the death penalty. Overtaken by numerous drug-related offences, the government of The Gambia through the powers of The National Assembly and under the office of then Minister of Justice Edward Anthony Gomez, amended the Drug Control Act in 2010 making it possible for persons found in the possession of over 250 grams of cocaine or heroin to receive the death penalty. This however received immediate condemnation from the Bar Association and various Human Rights groups citing its conflict with another clause in our constitution, 18(2), which stated clearly that only “offences involving violence or the administration of any toxic substance, resulting in the death of another person” could legally carry the death sentence.

It was a cool September night as they sat on the sofa after dinner, catching up on the day’s activities. It was amongst their favorite things to do after a hectic day. He would usually go on about work and she would about life in general.

He said to her that night with excitement running up and down his face, “The soil of this nation is all one needs to be rich you know. I wish I knew this a long time ago.” He continued with his examples of one retired civil servant here and there who has since retired to farming and is now living in ‘sutura’ and peace and a few others who have been making a living off our soil; especially women farmers who take care of their families with the soil’s reward.
