Lucy the Chimp

Lucy and Janis Carter taken a year before Lucy's death

I lived in Gambia my entire life and never once heard of Lucy. Imagine the huge surprise I got when my roommates summoned me to the living room because they wanted to talk about a sensitive issue regarding a chimp killed in Gambia. This was a year ago. They asked me if I knew Lucy. I said "Nope..never heard of her.

Long live the Maasai people

I love this photograph. The wrinkles on her face seem to be going in a circular motion just like the beads around her neck.

Yohoss

I've had this on my Facebook for quite a while and I forgot to put it on here. I made "yohoss" ( Oysters & Gravy ) about a month ago. Since I couldn't get my hands on freshly smoked oysters, I grabbed two packs of canned smoked oysters from the supermarket. It wasn't expensive at all. I spent no more than a $1.70 on each.

Muslim Names Around The World

I read an article some months ago and it gave me insight into Muslim names around the world. These were mainly derivatives of Arabic names.

Here are some excerpts from the piece.

Viviane Ndour - Waaw Waaw

If you're a Viviane fan, you're gonna love this song. It's grown on me (although I could do without Salam Diallo and the out of tune drumming). I find myself singing along to certain parts...ie my favorite "Yaa saf saapak sucre" hehe

The quality of Senegalese Music videos has improved drastically and it makes this Senegambian very happy. Thione Seck's new video for his song DIAGA was like a mini movie, very nicely made. I would have posted it on here but the song is 8mins long and any song that goes beyond 5 minutes loses me along the way :)

Yves Saint Laurent Scarf

I was reading an article on this YSL scarf. The writer wanted one badly and it got me thinking would I ever buy a scarf retailing for $995? Absolutely not. The scarf is made out of wool and cashmere which is usually costly but the price is still not adding up. $995 bucks would stock my freezer with a year's worth of seafood. Now that is my kind of treat.

Elva Fields

Elva Fields Jewelry makes beautiful necklaces. The company was started by Emily Wheat Maynard in 2003 and she named it after her great grandmother. Any woman would feel glamorous in one of these. They embrace the femininity of women and I adore.

Dear Omar Saidykhan

I was gonna stay mute but I don't possess the moral fiber in me this very moment to refrain from writing. You are so caught up in your own world, you've lost touch with reality. I could have posted this on your blog but I figured your ego doesn't need any more stroking...not even a modicum since you are already deluded as it is . Please stop whining. I keep wondering how old you are. Not that it is any of my business but your antics are reminiscent of a toddler throwing a tantrum.

You wrote " Without warning, a swarm of Gambians supposedly my “friends” assaulted me for my tendency to use words they find too “big” and utterly pretentious.

Fashion Quote

" People ask how can a Jewish kid from the Bronx do preppy clothes? Does it have to do with class and money? It has to do with dreams.
