In a Jail Cell

By chance, they share a jail cell. They did not know each other outside, and only met in the prison. They sit together in the dark, occupying the tiny space.

Peak 4 Poverty Orphanage Visit

My friends Nabeel and Heather were recently in Tanzania to raise money for orphans who have been infected or affected by the HIV virus. They climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for orphanages across Tanzania to help educate these children. I remember when I first met Nabeel and we spoke about Peak4Poverty ( the charity that he oversees), he said to me "Jatou, it is our duty to help as Africans. If we do not help these poor children, who is going to help them?" and that has stuck with me ever since. I thought it was quite remarkable for a young man his age.

Amen to these slippers! Thus far my favorite shoes of 2011. I found these on luisaviaroma and they are heavenly. Too bad you can only pre order them at this time but they look like they are here to stay so no rush. I was so impressed I had to read the story behind these beauties and I found out the designer is named Charles and hails from Milan. The shoes have also been recently featured on Vogue. 2011, so far so good for fashion.

Galliano ..Ciao x

The best way to sum up John Galliano is In Vino Veritas ( in wine there is truth). I won't flog a dead horse so I'll stop there; albeit I can't wait for his replacement.

Mboko Ndimba Mobutu

I can't believe it's taken me this long to blog about Mboko. Sometime last year, I was doing a random search on Mobutu (Former president of Zaire) and randomly came across this very fashionable gentleman called Mboko Ndimba Mobutu. I adore this guy. Tonight, I happened to be reading about a Chanel briefcase and guess what? Mobutu's photograph was used. Oh my gush!! I immediately recognized him. Couldn't believe I still remembered his name afterall it's been about a year since I saw him . The 21 year old lives in Paris and is the Fashion editor and stylist of Ghubar Magazine.

Hugh Grant ....Arghhhh

Today's been one of my best days. I talked to family and I'm grateful for every second I spent with them. My cousin Aji was hilarious. She said "Jatou, you realize you've been talking nonstop. I think you should pause and get some air..hehe". I was like "Screw you!" (in wolof)..whatever that is...Haha. When someone asks me adjectives to describe myself, I usually tell them that I'm very talkative. Now thanks to some Facebook brilliance, I learnt another word for talkative is loquacious. I think I'm gonna use that from now on. That way people won't know what the heck I'm talking about. I didn't know the meaning either so thank you google cheeky

Spur of the moment..tonight, I thought why not read some Hugh Grant quotes. Nothing new right.

Momodou Ceesay- Gambian writer & artist

Posted by jatougaye | Tags: La Femme Noire | 0 Comments

I just got done reading about a fascinating Gambian writer and artist. Momodou Ceesay was born in 1945 and hails from Banjul. He was granted study abroad scholarships at Suffield Academy and Wesleyan University as a teen and also holds diplomas from the University of Poitiers in Tours, and La Sorbonne in Paris for studies in the French language.

He wrote a book titled "On My Knees Before These Mighty Heavens" and here's what I dug up about it via his official webite.

"The work uses excerpts from Hebrew Scripture and the Koran to describe the searching of a better life for African and African American people.

Ancient art - Simba

This used to scare the living daylight out me. LITERALLY! haha. I can't believe i'm laughing. It was not funny at that time. I grew up in Bakau and we had Simbas in our neighborhood quite often. If you're not familiar with it, I'll try my best to explain it to you. Simbas are men dressed up as lions. They look possessed most times LOL. What happens usually is someone in the neighborhood would hire a group of Simbas and organize an event for people to watch them perform. Here's the catch. In order to be a spectator , you have to purchase this itty bitty piece of cloth called "pass" or "fass". I can't recall which one it is but you have the most fun if you don't buy it . What that means is, you risk being beaten up by the Simba. HA! Some Simbas are much nicer than others.
