Misunderstood

I think the most misunderstood part of me is my music. The moment I get asked that very familiar question "What kinda music do you like" and my reply goes "ummmm I like Britney, I like...."

BAM!
I've lost all credibility. The other party doesn't seem to be interested in whatever artist comes after Britney. From that moment on, it's that thought in their head " She likes watered down diluted senseless bubblegum pop".

There is more to me than Britney Spears but I'm not embarrassed to say that I'm a big Britney fan....at least her first 3 albums and her "Circus" album. I was there from the beginning so she's very close to my heart even though her music at the moment is questionable. It kills me when people think I don't listen to anything but Pop music. I think I should start giving out names of obscure artists and then get to the mainstream ones instead of the other way round because it's clearly not working. Why do I sound like I care? Maybe I do.

I was in a restaurant in New York City last summer and my cousin's friend kept talking about Neo Soul endlessly. I jokingly said to her " Ouch 80% of Neo Soul songs bore me". I wasn't joking though, hehe... I meant it. Most of the songs do bore me. I might have to use them as lullabies when I have kids so they could fall asleep hehe

Back to my story. So this chick goes " Oh you don't have a good ear for music."

Girl please!

Girl Puleeeeeeeeeeeze

Just because you have an afro and put flowers in your hair doesn't make you a capable judge of good music. Why do Neo Soul fans think they are somehow blessed because they've accepted this less known genre and that people who aren't fans are either deaf or don't know what good music is.

The average Neo Soul singer is usually Afrocentric and I love that about them but some of the fans do get on my nerves. So what? I can't like Abba? I can't like George Michael? OOh because its not good music. It's not soulful enough. By the way, George Michael has more soul in him that some of those singers. Here's an analogy. A Neo Soul fan judging my musical taste is like a heavy metal fan writing a review on a jazz artist. I'm thinking now I can't even relax my hair? I gotta get dreads or an Afro and listen to some Musiq Soulchild?? Okay I'm going off tangent now haha

For heaven's sake, listen to your music and let me be. When you come back from your musical odyssey and you can confidently name me 3 singers from each continent, then you and I can talk. Then I would know you've appreciated enough to argue about what good music is or isn't. A good ear for music is relative to what part of the world the content hails from and what melodies, rhythms, pitches, harmonies are accepted within that culture as "In or off tune". For now, the judgments are pure fallacies. Back to my music ;-)
