The drums roared and the crowd cheered, some clapping and some waving their hands in the air as the wrestlers danced rhythmically in a rather captivating fashion to the sound of music that heavily saturated the atmosphere; making it tense and electric, even though, the actual event had not started yet .As the drummers beat their drums furiously with dexterity, one could tell of their mastery, on the art of drumming.
The wrestlers, who were tall and muscular men, weighting over a 100kgs were dressed in nothing more than what I could recognize as pants, besides the tons of charms and jujus of diverse sizes and types that were tied in a criss-crossed pattern all over their bodies. They each took a bath of some greenish-looking concoction pouring it over their heads and down their bodies from different containers at regular intervals right in front of the rolling cameras.
This was a very important contest, it was talked about and everyone had been looking forward to this day with anticipation. The wrestlers seem to be doing their preparations just moments before the combat started as they each consulted their marabouts who were on standby and looking quite small in stature in comparison to their imposing customers. Surprisingly, they were given ample time by the referee, a composed looking gentleman neatly dressed in long sleeves with a whistle in between his lips.
In no time at all, the referee who has been kept waiting blew his whistle signaling to everyone that it was time they got started. Soon the two men were facing each other as they uttered their last bits of incantations. Meanwhile the spectators including a cross-section of distinguished statesmen, musicians and retired wrestlers all held their breath as they watched intensely with profound interest, for history is being made in front of their very eyes. Tyson, the 39 years old veteran wrestler who had had many trophies to his name versus Bala, a 23 years old outspoken and ambitious wrestler who has recently risen to prominence.
Heavy and vicious blows were exchanged as the clock ticked by. Knowing quite well that speed and accuracy are crucial elements in winning any boxing game, although this wasn’t just boxing. Bala, didn’t waste a second in sending ferocious consecutive blows that weakened the renowned opponent whom so many people had come to watch. More by luck than experience, he took the bold and final step of swinging the veteran to the ground. Springing on to his feet he emerged a champion, waved his hand in the air triumphantly as the crowd roared in support.
The veteran on the other hand was totally embarrassed and it was quite visible on his sand-covered face that this might be his very last fight. It is time to leave the arena for the younger generation. This is really astonishing, the actual fight barely lasted 30 seconds but the build-up to the event took months.
